it was'nt possible to interact as not possible to reach that website ,where an interesting article in the Washington Post , appeared. There is greater concern in India towards bio-ethical theme in context of Hinduism, Jainism, Buddhism-main Indic religions. Visit ISHG 2009 website ,if interested, please.

Not that this isn't a worthy subject of study, but why, in your opinion, should we concentrate on it?

Hi TJM,

I'm not sure where he is actually from - he told me once, but it has slipped my mind. I suspect that the concept is very similar in New England and parts of the South. Also, the military concept of a gentleman is probably the same, especially in families with a long history of service.

What my friend found most disconcerting, I suspect, was that the social elite held the concept of military service as something that one just did. I think that this is where a lot of the differences came in - you had the advantages of your birth, or what you could make of yourself, so "of course" you had he responsibility to defend it.

Thanks for the link on the polarization of the American public! I appreciate it. It certainly is an ongoing trend that apears to be getting stronger.

I am curious, what area of the US is your friend from? (Very few people in DC are actually from here - we've all moved here from somewhere else). I ask because what you described as being a gentleman is consistent with the concept that I grew up with in Maine, and while attending military school in Alabama, and while serving in the Army. It seemed odd that he held a different view.

Also, regarding the polarization of American discourse, there was an article about this in this week's Economist (<a href="http://www.economist.com/world/na/PrinterFriendly.cfm?story_id=11581447&CFID=10889075&CFTOKEN=37006097" rel="nofollow">The Big Sort</a>), basically stating that Americans are quickly segregating themselves into neighborhoods of like-minded individuals and only choosing to watch and listen to media that fits their preconceived notions, thus squelching any discourse on social and political issues.
