After the riding we dispersed, we drifted home in twos and threes. through cold and rain we spat and cursed, this ancient war of families. Armies past and then returned, they killed and raped, they stole and burnt. so from the cradle we have learnt, to be as hard as stone. and learned to stand [...]

A recent report by the Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission has been something of a hot potato for Canadian (and US) troops lately. Entitled From Hope to Fear: An Afghan Perspective on Operations of Pro-Government Forces in Afghanistan, the report highlights two central types of operations that are extremely problematic: AIHRC is concerned that lack [...]

With a hat tip to Mike Innes at the CTLab. Well, I’m certainly not a Luddite, but I do have some concerns with this. My main concern is that this type of technology, while useful, will act as a memory replacement. Yes, I know, Socrates said the same thing about writing. My concern is somewhat [...]

It certainly seems as if my previous post on the idea of evaluating the HTS caused a fair bit of reaction on both theoretical and epistemological grounds. I thought it would be worthwhile to pull out some of the ideas I talked about in that post a little more. And, I’ll admit, that I was [...]

Daniel at Neuranthropology has launched a Best of Antropology blogging initiative. Personally, I think it is an excellent idea, and I really like Alexandre’s idea of creating an anthology of them.

The many woes of the HTS, at least the public casting and presentation of them, have been ably collated by my colleague Max Forte at Open Anthropology (e.g. here, here and here amongst many other places). What truly bothers me, in addition to Pravda being considered as a reputable publisher < rolleyes>, is that the [...]

For the past couple of weeks, I have been involved in multiple conversations covering quite divergent subject matter, that all boil down to a basic problem in social epistemology. The main thrust of all of these conversations has been how, and why, people confuse a “map” [theory] with a “territory” [reality].

Hat Tip to Max Forte for putting up a link to the HTS handbook (available here). I’ve only had a chance for a quick scan of it but, based on what I have seen so far, it looks like a moderately decent Intro to Methods text. The problem, of course, is that the HTS is [...]

I just got back from a six day concert tour in Mexico sponsored by the Orquesta del Nuevo Mundo in Mexico City. It was an intriguing experience in many ways and, as I was sitting in the Toronto airport waiting to find out if I would get home again, a number of thoughts wended their [...]

The past couple of months have been insanely busy, and the pace will keep up for the next month at least. Part of this comes from the “usual” things (teaching, writing, consulting, etc.), but a lot of it, for the past couple of weeks and the next two weeks, comes from a hectic concert schedule [...]
