Plagiarism (?) in the commons

Posted By on September 28, 2009

I have been following a series of posts by my friend Max Forte over at Openanthropology on his “relationship” with the Open Anthropology Co-operative (OAC).  I won’t go into the details, they are all available on Max’s site, but the most recent one is extremely disturbing.  There is, at least from the evidence Max provides, some pretty clear evidence that the OAC administrators are condoning plagiarism.

What is truly disturbing about all of this is that it appears as if plagiarism is being condoned by the administrators.  This is not a case of Max asserting intellectual ownership rights, although that may well come up.  It is about the basic decency of people to quote you by your name.  I am disgusted that people who call themselves academics and scholars would not have that basic decency.

  1. Thanks again Marc, very much appreciated.

No worries, Max. I can’t stand to see someone’s work stolen without even the courtesy of of saying who wrote it!

  3. All of this, and just as my bout with what appears to be H1N1 was finally beginning to taper off.

Incidentally, and unrelated to the discussion, I hope you are taking every precaution on campus. I never get a flu in September, and I got this one after going to campus just three times, and seemingly washing my hands with anti-bacterial gel after each time I opened a door or pressed an elevator button. On the other hand, if it really was H1N1, it is not substantially worse than any other flu.

H1N1? Glad to hear it was mild! Yes, Carleton is taking a lot of precautions about an outbreak. So far, I haven’t seen many signs of one, but I am fully expecting that as we get into the winter months it will appear; that’s part of the problem with a uni where all the buildings are linked by (over) heated tunnels.

Personally, I usually get a low grade flu bug every Fall. It never really stops me but, every since I had double pneumonia back when i was 17, I’ve been susceptible to it. I’ve noticed that since i started singing again six years ago, the severity of these Fall flu sessions has dropped; which is nice ;-) .

  5. By the way, the whole thing has started once again, not the flu I mean (that is still lingering), I mean the same twit has reposted the same material with some added new provocation. This time however he does not seem to have won favour with his comrades, who seem to be decidedly displeased with having to do a re-run and possibly exposing the network as a whole to jeopardy. See the notes starting here:

Unfreakin’ believable! I’m beginning to think that Nikos needs to be sent to an appropriate institution; say a boarding nursery school!
